As at 31 March 2011, Tongaat Hulett employed 39 314 employees, of whom 6 361 are based in South Africa, 126 in Botswana, 14 573 in Mozambique, 123 in Namibia, 706 in Swaziland and 17 425 in Zimbabwe.

Programmes are in place at all operations as part of the company wide commitment to attract, develop and retain valuable skills. Performance and talent management processes establish clear roles and responsibilities, performance reviews, performance ratings, assessment of future potential and action plans to enhance performance. Competency gaps and individual training and development needs are identified and action plans implemented to address these needs. Effective coaching and mentoring are encouraged.

In South Africa there continues to be a need to address the imbalances of the past and a strong employment equity culture has been fostered over many years. Actions are continuing to improve the representation of designated groups, with particular emphasis on Africans, black women and persons with disabilities, with the intention to align the workforce profile with the underlying demographics of the country. As at 31 March 2011, 56,4% of management and 81,5% of skilled and supervisory positions are filled by black employees. Women constitute 36,5% of the workforce across South African operations. Within the South African operations, 73,4% of the 552 graduates and diplomate employees are black, with women constituting 44,7%.

Actions continue to be taken to ensure that Tongaat Hulett is a dynamic, growing, results orientated, indigenous, innovative and sustainable organisation.
