Tongaat Hulett employs a total of 35 444 employees, of whom 5 077 are based in South Africa, 12 069 in Mozambique, 17 178 in Zimbabwe and 1 120 in Swaziland.

A strong employment equity culture has been entrenched throughout Tongaat Hulett with 49,6% of employees that are at management level and 76,7% of skilled and supervisory positions comprising black incumbents. Throughout the South African operations 57.5% of the 449 graduates and diplomats comprise black employees with women constituting 33,2%. Concerted action is taken across operating companies to expand the racial and gender mix at every level with focused attention on African and female advancement and representation of persons with disabilities.
